WHAT is a belief, and how does it shape our reality?
A belief is an idea that you hold to be true. Usually these ideas are imbued in our childhood. Beliefs about God, religion, race, other people, ourself.
All these are ideas that are literally imprinted like seeds in consciousness. As children, we hold them to true and then of course, they become true for us.
How do they become true for us?
They shape our perceptions, our attitudes, our feelings, our moods, our assumptions, our expectations about what we call reality. And so our field of reality, of infinite possibilities gets filtered into our consciousness through these beliefs. Beliefs act as a filter that modifies the field of pure potentiality into a particular perceptual experience of reality.
There are people who go to war for their beliefs e.g. patriotism, nationalism, which in one way is a sophisticated form of tribalism, becomes a strong belief. So you are ready to die for your country, for your religion, or for your God, or become a martyr, etc. etc.

are beliefs empowering or limiting?
In most cases they are limiting. Of course, if the belief is that you are a mythical being with a great responsibility to change the world, then it could be empowering. If the belief enhances your self-image, it could be empowering. But even empowering beliefs are, in a sense, limiting because they limit you by defining you. Any definition limits you by defining you. Any label, any valuation, any analysis limits you.
The true empowerment comes from going beyond belief. Belief is a cover up for insecurity – I repeat that – Belief is a cover up for insecurity.
To find your true self is to go beyond belief, you can start to do that by questioning all your beliefs.
Question every belief that you have:
The world is as we are. That’s the only belief we need to have.
We can change our experience of the world by changing our beliefs, and ultimately going beyond all beliefs

- Is it True?
- Why do I think its true?
- What does holding onto this belief define me as?
- Who would I be if I did not have this belief?
- Is there an idea that is beyond what I currently believe?
- How does my life express itself out there as a result of my beliefs.

will this challenge my religious beliefs?
No. We only work with beliefs that no longer serve you, for example, a 40 years woman believes she cannot make a speech at her own birthday party because she feels she hasn't got it all together yet. When she learned from her own enquiry that no-one really has their schtuff together, she said it took the pressure off and she realised that she is who she is and is not this 'together chick' she thought she had to be in front of everyone else.
